  14. <p>    ACCUSED. Carl Stokes, 61, former mayor of Cleveland; of
  15. stealing a 20-lb. bag of dog food; by a pet-store owner in
  16. Shaker Heights, Ohio. It was the second shoplifting incident
  17. involving Stokes, now a municipal judge. In December he
  18. acknowledged absentmindedly taking a $2.39 screwdriver from a
  19. Bedford, Ohio, store and putting it in his pocket. Stokes denied
  20. any wrongdoing and requested a jury trial. He will appear in
  21. court on June 26 to respond to the charge. Elected one of the
  22. nation's first black big-city mayors in 1967, Stokes has been
  23. the subject of rumors that he might run for the office again
  24. this year.
