- <p> ACCUSED. Carl Stokes, 61, former mayor of Cleveland; of
- stealing a 20-lb. bag of dog food; by a pet-store owner in
- Shaker Heights, Ohio. It was the second shoplifting incident
- involving Stokes, now a municipal judge. In December he
- acknowledged absentmindedly taking a $2.39 screwdriver from a
- Bedford, Ohio, store and putting it in his pocket. Stokes denied
- any wrongdoing and requested a jury trial. He will appear in
- court on June 26 to respond to the charge. Elected one of the
- nation's first black big-city mayors in 1967, Stokes has been
- the subject of rumors that he might run for the office again
- this year.
